Located in the heart of Newark’s Ironbound section (a Portuguese enclave in New Jersey) is Lou’s Corner Market.   Established in 2001, it is a family owned business whose mission is to serve the needs of not only the Portuguese Americans of the neighborhood but also that of the various Latin Americans in the region.  They offer a variety of Portuguese, Brazilian, California, and Spanish wines.  Lou’s carry a vast selection of beers from many different countries, as well as craft beers made locally.   Along with adult beverages they sell Portuguese olives, olive oil  cheeses and all sorts of Portuguese pantry items.  What makes Lou’s really stand out is their amazing “home made” Portuguese smoked sausages madee right on the premises.  They make two varieties: regular and spicy.  They are the most exquisite chouriços you will ever taste.  Seasoned with garlic, wine, paprika and other spices it packs the best flavor.  They pay close attention to use locally sourced pork and the fat to meat ratio is excellent.  The real flavor however comes from smoking them in house with real wood.  Walking around the neighborhood when Lou is smoking the sausages is pure torture since the smell wafts for blocks and beckons you to buy one, along with a fresh Portuguese roll (also sold in the store), and just eat it right there.  Lou recently moved into a new location at 168 Van Buren St. mere feet from the original store which was at the intersection of Lafayette and Van Buren Streets.  For those of you who cannot make it to the Ironbound Lou has a website order section and will ship to you via FedEx.
